Are lab-grown, lab-created or man-made diamonds real?

Yes, lab-grown diamonds are real. A lab grown diamond is just what the name implies. It is a real diamond that is grown in a laboratory that replicates the conditions in the earth that cause natural mined diamonds to form.
 
Lab grown diamonds have the same chemical, optical, physical properties and crystal structure as natural mined diamonds. Lab grown diamonds respond to light the same way as a natural diamond and they are just as hard — a 10 on the Mohs scale of hardness. 

How are lab-grown diamonds made?

When diamonds grow in the earth, carbon atoms are subjected to extremely high temperatures and high pressure. Those conditions are recreated to grow diamonds in a lab.
 
There are two methods to grow diamonds in a lab. High Pressure, High Temperature (HPHT) which uses extreme heat and pressure to form a diamond. The Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) method “seeds” the diamond to get it started. A seed is placed in a vacuum chamber with moderate heat and temperature. A mixture of gases that includes carbon is introduced into the chamber. The carbon attaches itself to the seed and forms a diamond. Once a rough diamond is produced in a lab, it is then cut and polished to bring out its beauty. Just like natural diamonds, lab-grown diamonds will have variations in quality.

Can anyone tell the difference between lab-grown and mined diamonds?

Visually, a lab grown diamond looks exactly the same as a mined diamond, it will have the same amazing sparkle and hardness as a natural stone. The biggest difference is that one is made in the earth and the other is made by scientists in a controlled laboratory setting. Not even a trained jeweler using a loupe or microscope can tell the difference. The only way to distinguish between the two is by testing the diamond in a gemological laboratory using highly sophisticated equipment. With a lab grown diamond you’ll get the same quality as a mined diamond, but at a fraction of the cost.
